New Technology At My Gaming Table

Posted in Advice/Tools, Play on August 27th, 2010 by DeadGod – 6 Comments

I just ran the first session of a Ravenloft campaign last night.  If anything, Ravenloft thrives on mood.  I had a table full of seven players, so I knew I had to step up my game to keep them on-task and in the mood.  Luckily (or perhaps expectedly,) I am also an amature haunter during the Halloween season, so I like to pretend that I know at least a couple things about creating a mood. read more »

So I did it.  I played a player narrative game of Don’t Rest Your Head.  I used the system from my previous post and it worked wonderfully.  It was very fun and definitely a learning experience.  Here are some of the things I learned:

The party, accompanied by a Dwarven expedition, made their way into the abandon underground city of Dwarvenhearth.  Their primary goal for this session was to secure the the Commerce district as HQ for the expedition.  After this, they were free to decide how to tackle searching the rest of the massive city.

Another session comes and goes.  Despite having the intention of chopping monster HP by a third and increasing damage by 50%, I didn’t end up doing that.  While it would have been a 5 minute exercise to do that, when you spend most of your weekend dealing with a toilet replacement that 5 minutes it better spent doing nothing at all.

My last game session found our party raiding the tomb of an ancient dwarven king at the behest of a dwarf noble.  The goal was to retrieve one of the few known keys that would unlock the doors to Dwarvenhearth.  After a combat, some traps, and some puzzle solving, the party managed to find the secret treasure room of the ancient dwarf king and come away with the key, a load of gold, and some shiny new magic items.  (Or centuries old but still perfectly good magic items, as it were.)

The following is an After Adventure Report for my “Fanning the Flames” Campaign:

This past Sunday my game group, consisting of 5 level 5 PCs, was able to “best” a young black dragon, vanquish a powerful demon, and rescue a young boy from certain doom.  However, they were left an ominous revelation that perhaps they have been inadvertently working for the very being they thought they were working against. read more »
